Hospitality House, now in its eleventh year, seeks to help homeless women find home, health and hope.
The Current Situation
Homelessness in this country is at an all-time high. On any given night in America, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless, according to estimates of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. The 2011 one-night count revealed that nearly 2,500 people are homeless in King County. South King County has been recognized as 'underserved' in providing transitional housing to its homeless population.
How We Fit In
Hospitality House’s 90-day program is laying the foundation for empowerment and success. This begins with meeting the basic needs of clients - a bed, a hot meal, and a safe and stable environment. Our home-like atmosphere combined with a new found security affords clients the opportunity to look beyond their current circumstances to their future. Each client’s objective is to find permanent housing and financial stability, how this is achieved is based upon the individual clients. Case managers support clients through the program. Case management is the underpinning of our client’s future and an integral piece of our program. Our clients are given the tools and the blue prints necessary to build their own futures; we are implementing the pouring of the foundation.
During the 90-days, the clients are offered a bed and hot meal every night and a case manager to help find a way back to stability. 4-5 days during the week, the women are allowed to stay in the shelter and work on their stability, but during the weekend they must leave the shelter during the day and return in the evening. The House is a cozy place for the women to call home and a nurturing environment to focus on life improvement.
Hot Meal
A recipient of home cooked meal feels cared for no matter of their circumstances. Hospitality House is fortunate enough to be able to provide a hot home-cooked meal for every client, every evening. This is facilitated by a dedicated volunteer core that share in the belief that home is more than a bed but also having a home-cooked meal. These meals not only demonstrate in a concrete way that we value the women, the meal also provides a chance to have for a shared experience. As we all know gathering around a table for a meal nourishes more than just the body.
