Save the Date: Spring Fling Saturday, March 6, 2010

Mark your calendars for our Spring Fling gala fundraiser coming in March. In the plans: a few new twists on an old theme, including an inspirational speaker, a beautiful new venue and a few special auction items sure to tempt. We’ve scheduled the Fling to avoid spring break but early enough to provide a fun event to break up the gray of winter.

“Boats for Beds”
June 26, 2010!

Along with the new decade, comes a new event for Three Tree Point Yacht Club– “Boats for Beds!”

A fun 90 minute race is being planned for the afternoon of June 26th, from 1-4 PM with a social event on the dock after the finish.  We are looking for boats- cruisers or racers - and Captains willing to donate a few ‘crew spots’ on their boats. Have a power boat?  How about being the committee boat, the photography boat, or just offering spots for spectators?  This is a new event for Hospitality House and in addition to the Mid Sound Summer Socials.

These ‘crew’ positions will be raffled off at Hospitality House‘s Bunco Night on Feb 5 and auctioned at the March 5th Gala dinner to be held at the Normandy Park Cove.   Get involved! Get your boat off the dock and let’s take some folks out there and show them what we love!  Maybe we’ll get a new member or two from this event!

Any questions please call or email Jeanne @ 206 406 -9673 or pmtwalker@hotmail.com. Posters and all artwork for the Spring Fling & Auction made by Tom Hubbard

Hospitality House netted over $2500 at its first, but not last, Bunco night. Nearly 100 new and old friends of the House had a great evening rolling the dice for Hospitality House. Much thanks to the World Bunco Association, Trader Joe’s, and the friends of the House for the many prizes and raffle items that were the icing on the cake. BUNCO was held on Friday, February 5, 2010. Thank you Normandy Park Congregational Church (one of the shelter's sponsoring churches) for opening your doors to our event!.

Past News that makes a difference

February 12 was Housing and Homeless Advocacy Day. Over 500 people from 39 of 49 legislative districts joined together to advocate and speak for keeping and protecting access to affordable housing as well as to end homelessness in our state. Advocates, services providers, and citizens joined together for this annual day where they met in district staff offices with representatives or staff, heard speakers of efforts and impacts around our state, and participated in workshops on relevant topics. Hospitality board members lobbied the representatives and senators for the 34 and 33rd districts.

Thank you to everyone who worked to make our 8th annual Walk for the Women a huge success.  On Saturday, November 7, 2009 over 80 volunteers attended the annual luncheon hosted by the Board of Directors to thank all those who help carry out the ministry of Hospitality House. Our speaker, Tames Alan, (whose stipend was covered by a grant from Humanities Washington) regaled us with the traditions and restrictions of Victorian dining. Now we all know for sure which fork to use for fruit or fish, which spoon for consommé or sorbet!
But, as nice as this event was, we discovered we missed getting the word out to some of our dearest volunteers – and we apologize profusely. If you were missed, please contact Hospitality House and leave your name, address and phone and we will sleuth out how and why we missed you. An accurate and current data base is a high priority for us so that this won't happen again. We LOVE our volunteers and depend on them for the success of Hospitality House.
Thanks to our generous donors we were able to raise over $23,000 for Hospitality House.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  NOVEMBER 12, 2008

HOMELESS SHELTER NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,
CELEBRATES EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY

Burien, WA – November 2008 “It has been a monumental year for Hospitality House,” explained Joan Brown, President of the Board of Directors. “Not only did we provide 2,710 bed nights for 84 homeless women of South King County, but we also celebrated our eighth anniversary, revamped our strategic goals for 2009 – and named a full time Executive Director.”

The House’s new Executive Director, Natalie Reber, has extensive experience working with non-profit and political organizations such as Washington CeaseFire and the League of Education Voters. Among her passions: a deep commitment to social justice.  She envisions a world where economic and social justice will lead the way to a more fair and humane society.

“We are pleased to welcome Natalie to our organization as we prepare for uncertain economic times ahead,” said Joan.  “Nonprofits will be especially challenged in 2009 as families, churches and governments face unprecedented budget cuts. Natalie offers the fundraising, management and communications skills necessary to reset strategies and discover new ways to solve old fundraising problems.”

On the job for just two weeks, Natalie has already made great inroads to new funding, garnering $15K from King County and enlisting the support of yet another sponsoring church, Grace Lutheran in Des Moines.

When asked to describe herself in five adjectives, Natalie replied, “Tenacious, passionate, focused, fun, and on occasion goofy.  (She likes to play practical jokes, so look out!).
